A bipartisan package was introduced with the goal of increasing employment opportunities for those with disabilities. Introduced by Representative Jon Hoadley (D-Kalamazoo) and Representative Steve Marino (R-Harrison Twp.), the bills would allow employers to apply for up to $1,000 to make reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities. The plan creates the “Centralized Reasonable Accommodations Act,” which empowers the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to manage employer requests. Additionally, it secures funding for the program through the Workmen’s Compensation Second Injury Fund, which is designed to compensate employers for payments made to employees with disabilities. The bills have been referred to the House Commerce and Tourism Committee for consideration.
