This week, Representative Tom Cochran (D-Mason) and Representative Kristy Pagan (D-Canton) introduced legislation restoring, then increasing, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a refundable tax credit available to low and middle-income individuals to offset taxes that are paid on wages. In 2011, the EITC was reduced from 20% of the federal level to 6%, Representative Cochran’s bill brings the credit back to 20% for tax years before January 1, 2017. Representative Pagan’s bill would increase the credit to 25% of the federal level for tax years beginning after December 31, 2016. The legislation has been referred to the House Tax Policy Committee for consideration.
