This week a three-bill package was introduced aimed at fixing Michigan roads. The legislation would create the Michigan Innovation Transportation Fund, administered by experts outside of the Michigan Department of Transportation. The fund would review, publicly post, implement, and then analyze ideas on ways to improve Michigan roads without increasing spending.
The legislation calls for $15 million from existing transportation spending to be used to test innovative ways to build or repair the state’s roads. A list of current projects under consideration would be available online, and an application process would be set in place for anyone to submit ideas directly to the board overseeing the fund.
The bill package was referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for consideration.
