Legislation Introduced Aimed at Increasing Transparency

Mar 05, 2021

This week, a bipartisan plan was introduced that would place the legislature and executive office under open records laws. Specifically, it would create the Legislative Open Records Act, which is similar to FOIA laws, and would make certain documents and communications within legislative offices subject to FOIA requests. The governor and lieutenant governor would be required to follow the Freedom of Information Act, which is already law in Michigan. Currently, Michigan is one of a few states that exempts the governor and state lawmakers from FOIA laws. The bill package was referred to the House Oversight Committee for consideration.

The legislature has worked on similar legislation in the past, but prior attempts to pass both chambers and make it to the governor’s desk were unsuccessful.
