Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Susan Corbin, acting director of the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity(LEO), has been appointed permanent director of the department. She has been serving as acting director since October 2020. Prior to her appointment, she served as senior chief deputy at LEO since its creation in August 2019. Ms. Corbin has previously worked as a senior advisory in the Office of Governor Whitmer, director of customer service at the Michigan Public Service Commission, among many other roles throughout state government. She holds a degree in International Relations from Michigan State University. The vision statement of LEO is to “make Michigan a place where all people, business and communities have the educational and economic means to reach their full potential.”
A second leadership change was also announced. Following the completion of the 2021-2022 Fiscal Year budget, State Budget Director Dave Massaron will leave his role for the private sector. He was appointed director by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in December 2020. The new fiscal year begins on October 1, 2021; thus, a new budget needs to be passed by the legislature, and signed by the governor, prior to that to avoid the state shutting down. According to the executive office they have begun the search for a new budget director and will make an announcement in the coming weeks.
