June Unemployment Rate Declines

Last month, Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell by 6.5% points to 14.8%. Total employment for the month advanced by 464,000 but was still 556,000 below February’s pre-pandemic levels. The national rate declined by 2.2% last month to 11.1%. Highlights from the monthly job report by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget include:

- The June 2020 rate was comparable to Great Recessions levels and was two-tenths of a percentage point above the peak Great Recession rate of 14.6% during June 2009
- Michigan’s second quarter 2020 unemployment rate averaged 19.9%, which was likely a record high
- The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan market last month was 17.7%, a decline of 5.5% from the prior month
