Increased Funding for Infrastructure Signed into Law

Mar 23, 2018

This week, Governor Rick Snyder signed into law a bill providing $175 million in funding for infrastructure improvements. The appropriation is for the current fiscal year and the state will disburse funds to local road agencies on April 4. Cities and Villages will receive $38.2 million, while counties will receive $68.4 million. There will be an additional $627 million from legislative changes to auto registration fees and from gas taxes, bringing the total spending for this year’s construction season to approximately $800 million.

Of all road funding from the state, 61% goes to local roads and 39% goes to state highways and interstate freeways. Between 2002-2010, only $3 million of General Fund dollars were allocated for roads. However, since 2011, $1.45 billion has been allocated for roads. The large uptick in spending follows months of experts calling alarm to the poor condition of roads and bridges throughout the state.
