House Votes to Halt Gas Tax for Six Months

Mar 11, 2022

Michigan’s 27.2 cents per gallon gas tax would be suspended for six-months under legislation passed by the House this week. Introduced by Representative Steve Johnson (R-Wayland), the suspension would begin on April 1 and run through September 30, 2022. The bill comes in response to the rising gas prices that drivers are paying at the pump. According to the nonpartisan House Fiscal Agency, the bill would reduce state revenue by $725 million. According to the bill sponsor, the lost revenue would be addressed during the budget process. The bill was sent to the Senate for consideration, skipping the typical committee process and being sent directly to the floor. Under the rules, the bill must be in the chamber for 5 days prior to a vote. The Senate is expected to take up the bill next week.

This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined five other governors calling for a tax holiday on the Federal gas tax, which is 18.4 cents per gallon, for the remainder of the year.
