Legislation introduced by Representative Steve Johnson (R-Shelbyville) would clarify the constitutional authority of the Auditor General to access and examine electronically stored and confidential information during an audit. Under the Michigan Constitution, the Office of the Auditor General is tasked with conducting financial and performance audits of all state government operations. The way the law is currently written, some have questioned whether their authority extends to confidential and electronic records. The legislation was passed by a vote of 103-3 in the House and has been referred to the Senate Oversight Committee for consideration.
