This week, the House passed legislation requiring photo identification when casting a ballot. Under the legislation as passed, if a voter does not have photo ID when attempting to vote, they will be given a provisional ballot. Within ten days they must go to their local clerk’s office to show their identification. Along with the voter ID bill, the House passed two pieces of companion legislation. Those bill would allow for no-cost ID and birth certificates for voters who can’t afford to purchase either. The legislation includes an appropriation making them referendum proof. The bills have been referred to the Senate Elections and Government Reform Committee for further consideration.
