House Moves to Ban Sanctuary Cities

Jun 09, 2017

This week, the House Local Government Committee reported two bills that would ban a local government from becoming a sanctuary city.  A ‘sanctuary city’ as they are called, is one that limits or abstains from cooperating with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in matters related to deportation, in either law or practice.  The committee voted on partisan lines to report the bills after two hearings, during which the overwhelming amount of testimony that was provided was by those opposed.  In addition, the majority of position cards submitted were from groups wishing to express their opposition.  Some groups were among those opposed include; the Michigan Municipal League, the Michigan Sheriff’s Association, and the Michigan Townships Association.  The bills have been sent to the House floor for further consideration.  As the package continues to move through the process, it is sure to continue to spark debate, as it remains to do nationwide and on the federal level.
