Yesterday, two special general elections were held to fill vacant House seats. In the 1st House District in SE Michigan, Democratic candidate Tenisha Yancey won with over 70% of the vote. This was not surprising, as this seat boasts a strong Democratic base. Representative-elect Yancey is an attorney and former Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor.
In the 109th House District in the Upper Peninsula, while the election results aren’t yet official, Democratic candidate Sara Cambensy appears to have won after garnering at least 54% of the vote. Representative-elect Cambensy currently works as the Director of Adult and Community Education for the Marquette Area Public Schools. In addition, she is working towards a Ph.D. in Environmental and Energy Policy.
In other related news, State Representative Andy Schor (D-Lansing) easily won his bid for Lansing Mayor. He will need to resign from the Michigan House of Representatives before taking the office of Mayor on January 1, 2018. This will create a vacancy in the House for which Governor Rick Snyder may call special primary and general elections.
