House Committees Reports Change to Primary Election Dates

Apr 16, 2021

Under a package of bills reported by the House Elections and Ethics Committee this week, Michigan’s primary election would move from August to June. The legislation also moves May school elections to the same date in June, consolidating the two elections. The combined elections would take place on the third Tuesday in June, beginning in 2023.

The package also makes other changes, including:

    • Gives the Bureau of Elections 90 days to review signatures on an initiative petition. If an initiative petition is filed within 45 days of an election, the signature review must be completed within 120 days
    • Gives County Clerks the authority to remove deceased voters from the rolls
    • Requires training for election challengers

The bills have been sent to the House floor for consideration.
