Legislation providing $1.5 billion in one-time funding aimed at reducing debt and improving public employee retirement systems was reported by the House Appropriations Committee this week. The bill, introduced by House Appropriations Chairman Thomas Albert (R-Lowell), appropriates a majority of the funding to pension plans for local governments and road commissions, with an additional $350 million to improve financing in the Michigan State Police retirement system. There are certain restrictions and requirements placed on the funds and the local units of governments in order to be eligible to receive the grants. The bill was sent to the House floor for consideration.
