Earlier this month, the legislature sent a package to Governor Gretchen Whitmer providing an exemption from sales and use taxes for PPE and other supplies purchased by businesses to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The proposal received bipartisan support in both chambers, passing by a vote of 104-6 in the House and 36-0 in the Senate. However, when the bills reached the governor’s desk, she vetoed both bills, stating the way the bills were written the program was ineligible to use federal COVID relief funding.
This week, the House voted to override the governor’s veto. The motion did not pass after receiving votes of 62-47 for both bills, which was short of the two-thirds approval that was needed.
