House Approves of Changes to Medical Marijuana Bills

Sep 16, 2016

This week, the House concurred in the Senate’s changes to three House bills creating a regulatory framework for medical marijuana.  The bills will provide guidelines for dispensaries, in addition to allowing patients to use non-smokeable forms of marijuana.  The package also sets up a licensing structure, creates a tax, and gives local governments authority over deciding how many dispensaries there can be and where they may be located within their community.  “Legislators and stakeholders have been working on creating a regulatory structure since the voter initiated law was passed in 2008.  After years of workgroups, negotiations, and debate, the legislature was able to find a common place that could be agreed upon and passed by the legislature,” stated Tim Ward of MLC.

Last week, the Senate adopted substituted versions of the bill and passed the package.  Now that the House has voted to concur in the changes, the bills will be sent to Governor Rick Snyder for final consideration.
