Members of the House and Senate Democratic Caucuses introduced an eleven-bill package reforming gun laws in Michigan. The proposed reforms contain three main categories: requiring universal background checks to close the private sale loophole, creating secure storage laws, and establishing extreme risk protection orders, also known as “red flag laws,” which allow the courts to temporarily remove firearms from those who pose a threat to themselves or others.
The House legislation was referred to the House Education Committee and the House Elections Committee for consideration. The Senate bills were referred to the Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee for consideration.
