This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer vetoed a House bill ending the extra $300 per week in federal unemployment benefits. The benefits are part of the federal assistance provided during the COVID-19 pandemic. The governor has stated she would be open to ending the additional benefit early, if the legislature raises Michigan’s current unemployment benefit to be in line with other Midwest states.
Currently, the additional federal benefit is set to expire in September per federal rules.
