Currently, Governor Rick Snyder is in China for his eighth investment mission to the country. The focus of his trip is promoting Michigan’s global leadership in mobility and autonomous vehicle technology development. Additionally, he is promoting Michigan as an ideal tourism destination for Chinese travelers. “Throughout his administration, Governor Snyder has been a strong advocate for promoting Michigan worldwide and highlighting everything from our universities to our parks and lakes to our workforce,” said Brendan Ringlever of MLC.
In 2018, Michigan ranked third in the nation for number of investment projects from China and first in the Midwest for number of jobs created by Chinese investment. Since 2011 Michigan has seen $1.21 billion in new investment from China, resulting in 6,304 jobs for Michigan residents.
On Monday, Governor Snyder signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China to further advance innovation and cooperation within the automotive and technology sectors. The formal agreement aims to accelerate the commercialization of emerging mobility technologies beneficial to both Michigan and China.
The governor also met with representatives from Chinese travel media outlets to discuss tourism and leisure travel opportunities in Michigan. The number of international visitors from China between 2011 and 2017 increased 84% and international travel spending during the same period increased 24%.
Governor Snyder departed for China on Friday, September 14 and is returning to Michigan on Saturday, September 22. This trip marks the Snyder administration’s 29th foreign investment mission.
