This week, Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation providing a framework for upgrading all of Michigan’s 911 systems statewide. The state’s current system is nearly forty-years old and doesn’t account for today’s technology. Additionally, approximately 70% of emergency calls are made from cellphones that cannot accurately be traced with the current system. The law will modify fees set by the Emergency 911 Service Enabling Act to provide the funding mechanism counties will use to upgrade their current infrastructure. Upgrades include the ability to send pictures and videos to dispatchers, and have an accurate GPS location. Some counties in Michigan already have these programs in place, this law will require implementation of upgrades statewide.
