On Tuesday, Governor Rick Snyder signed a supplemental funding bill appropriating $48.7 million to Detroit Public Schools (DPS). The additional funds will ensure DPS has enough money to remain open through the end of the current school year. Without the additional appropriation, DPS only had enough funds to remain open for a couple of weeks. The Governor signed an additional bill as part of the package, which expands the role of the Financial Review Commission (FRC) that works with the City of Detroit on its finances to include the school district as well. While the authority of the FRC will be expanded, it doesn’t apply to a district that is under the oversight of an emergency manager.
