Governor Signs Legislation Cracking Down on Mail Theft

Legislation dealing with the increasing problem of porch theft was signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week. Introduced by Senator Peter Lucido (R-Shelby Twp.), the new law creates state penalties for stealing mail or packages that are left in or near a mailbox. If convicted, a person would face a misdemeanor or one year in jail and a $500 fine for the first offence, a felony of up to five years and $1,000 for a second offense, and 10 years and $2,000 thereafter.
