Governor Signs High-Speed Internet Directive

In preparation for the federal funds Michigan is expected to receive over the next five years, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Directive to ready the state in expanding high-speed internet access. It directs state departments and agencies to collaborate with the legislature to work towards lowering costs, while expanding access of reliable high-speed service. Specifically, it directs state departments to take a range of actions, including:

- Prioritize in-state businesses and workers as the state continues to build up high-speed infrastructure
- Help local communities build more efficiently by utilizing the “dig once” principle by working on water, high-speed internet, roads, and other utilities simultaneously whenever possible
- Prioritize the improvement of high-speed infrastructure in communities with the slowest speeds first
- Develop a digital equity plan to identify barriers to internet access and make long-term plans with communities to improve access
