On Monday, Governor Rick Snyder signed an Executive Order creating the 21st Century Education Commission, something which he announced in January’s State of the State address. The commission will be responsible for analyzing top performing education systems nationwide, identifying issues impacting Michigan’s academic success, and recommending changes to restructure the state’s education system. The commission will be housed within the Executive Office and will issue their final report no later than November 30, 2016.
The commission will be comprised of twenty five members, including individuals representing the education, business, government, and nonprofit communities. They will also possess expertise in education system design at the local, state, and regional levels. Membership will consist of sixteen gubernatorial appointees, four legislative appointees, the State Board of Education president or his designee, and four state department directors or their representatives.
