Governor Signs Budgets

Jul 01, 2016

This week, Governor Rick Snyder signed the budgets providing funding for the upcoming 2016-2017 Fiscal Year.  The education omnibus budget totals $16.1 billion in funding for K-12 schools, community colleges, and state universities.  The budget includes an additional 2.9% of universities and 1.4% for community colleges.  Additionally, it increases K-12 appropriations per pupil funding by $60-$120.  However, within the budget there is $2.5 million in funding for nonpublic schools to comply with state mandates, something that could cause a legal issue and the legislature will need to work on when they resume session.

The general omnibus budget was signed on Wednesday and totals nearly $39 billion.  The budget includes $5.3 million to the Skilled Trades Training Fund, an increase of $1 million for the Pure Michigan campaign, $7 million to train 65 new state police troopers, and a 1% increase to county revenue sharing and incentive programs.

The Governor signed both budgets without any line-item vetoes.
