Governor Signs Affordable Housing Package

With the goal of expanding affordable housing options and lowering costs, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan 14-bill package into law this week. The bills aim to alleviate the shortage of affordable housing by creating more options, with a particular focus on creating new housing units in cities. Specifics within the package include:

- Establishing attainable housing district and providing certain tax exemptions for residential rehabilitation projects
- Supports the development and rehabilitation of residential housing and expands incentives for neighborhood enterprise zones
- Supports the establishment of residential housing districts in certain local governmental units by providing exemptions from certain taxes for residential facilities and housing
- Creates a state housing development authority, establishes certain funds to support housing development, land acquisition and development, and rehabilitation
