Governor Proposes MI Clean Water Expansion

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for a $300 million expansion of the MI Clean Water Plan, using Federal American Rescue Plan dollars. This builds upon her previously announced $200 million expansion to replace lead service lines statewide. Between these two expansions and previous announcements, Governor Whitmer has proposed spending $885 million to build up water infrastructure in Michigan’s communities, schools, and homes.

The governor’s latest proposed expansion would focus on three areas:

- Impaired Community Water Relief Program – $150 million
- Lead Action Level Exceedance Community Support Program – $100 million
- Community Technical, Managerial, and Financial Support Program – $50 million

The MI Clean Water Plan started as a $500 million investment in drinking water, source water, and wastewater infrastructure.
