Governor Proposes Law Enforcement Investment

Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for a $32 million investment to ensure law enforcement officers have the training and resources they need to effectively fight crime. This is part of the governor’s $75 million MI Safe Communities plan, which was laid out in July, utilizing Federal funding from the American Rescue Plan.

The $32 million investment would go to communities with the highest increases in violent crimes. The spending is broken into four pillars:

- $20 million for retention and recruitment
- $4.5 million for professional development and training
- $4.5 million for behavioral health services
- $3 million for local departments to hire homicide detectives or other line staff focused for investigating and solving violent crime

Governor Whitmer will make additional announcements on MI Safe Communities in the coming weeks. The proposals laid out in her plan requires an appropriation by the legislature.
