Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for a $200 million expansion to the MI Clean Water Plan to remove lead service lines across the state. This would be funded utilizing Federal American Rescue Plan funding. Included in the proposal, is $20 million to replace 100% of the lead service lines in Benton Harbor in five years. The city recently reported a lead exceedance under Michigan’s strict Lead and Copper Rule. The governor’s proposal would require an appropriation of funds by the legislature.
Announced in October 2020, the MI Clean Water Plan is a bipartisan and bicameral plan to invest $500 million to rebuild Michigan’s water infrastructure.
