Governor Outlines Federal Funding Priorities

Apr 16, 2021

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced her funding priorities as the state readies for more than $18 billion in federal funding available through the American Rescue Plan Act. Of that funding, state government is expected to receive $5.7 billion, local governments are set to receive $4.4 billion, and $3.9 billion will be directed to K-12 schools.

The governor’s priorities include:

    • Grant programs for small businesses to keep main street vibrant and communities resilient.
    • Business attraction efforts to invest in future technologies, mobility, and advanced vehicle technology research and development.
    • Addressing infrastructure needs including clean drinking water, broadband, public green spaces, climate resilient dams, and local infrastructure.
    • Improving public health capacity, expanded access to behavioral health supports, additional support services for the aging, and redesigning and integrating access to state benefits.
    • Expanding access to preschool and childcare, addressing pandemic learning loss, creating out of school learning opportunities, providing wraparound supports for mental health and social-emotional wellbeing, creating safe learning environments, and providing incentives to improve teacher recruitment and retention efforts.
