Last Friday, Governor Rick Snyder announced the appointments of new terms on the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) for Norm Saari and Sally Talberg. Additionally, the reappointment of Rachel Eubanks to the commission was announced. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. The MPSC is a three-member commission providing regulatory oversight of the state’s utilities and works towards safe and reliable energy. No more than two commissioners can represent the same political party.
Norm Saari has served on the MPSC since August 2015 and represents Republicans. Prior to his appointment, he served as Chief of Staff for the Michigan House of Representatives under former Speakers, Kevin Cotter and Jase Bolger. Additionally, he served as Governor Snyder’s manager of appointments and Chief of Staff for former Senator Jason Allen. Prior to that, he worked in governmental affairs for a utility company. Commissioner Saari’s term expires July 2, 2019.
Sally Talberg has served on the commission since July 2013 and represents Independents, and serves as chair of the commission. Prior to her appointment she worked in the public and private sectors with a focus on energy policy and utility regulation. She previously served as an analyst at the MPSC, managed enforcement and contested cases at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and advised commissioners at the Public Utility Commission of Texas. Chairwoman Talberg’s term expires July 2, 2021.
Rachel Eubanks was appointed to the commission in August 2016 and represents Independents. Prior to her appointment, she worked in public finance and served as a financial advisor for the Public Lighting Authority of Detroit. Commissioner Eubanks’ term expires July 2, 2023.
