On Thursday afternoon, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued an Executive Order increasing the length of time of the previous stay-at-home order, which was set to expire on April 13. As with the prior order, there’s an allowance for workers such as law enforcement, grocery store workers, restaurant workers, but with no in-restaurant dining, and healthcare workers. Additionally, car sales will be allowed auto dealers for remote sales, though showrooms must remain closed.
In addition, the order also places more stringent limitations on stores to reduce foot traffic and slow the speed of the virus. A large store can’t allow more than 4 customers for every 1,000 square feet of customer floor space, small stores must limit capacity to 25% of the total occupancy limits under fire codes. Additionally, large stores must close areas of the store dedicated to carpeting, flooring, furniture, garden centers, plant nurseries, or paint.
As with the previous order, people may engage in outdoor activities like walking, hiking, running, cycling, kayaking, canoeing, or any other recreational activity, consistent with remaining at least six feet from people from outside a person’s household and with other restrictions imposed by prior executive orders. The order clarifies, however, that travel for vacations, between two residences or for any other purpose is prohibited.
