Governor Keeps COVID Restrictions for Some, Loosens Others

In a press conference this afternoon, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced changes to restrictions that were put in place due to a spike in COVID-19 cases last month. According to the governor, the restrictions that have been in place over the last several weeks helped the state lower three key metrics, which has allowed for the loosening of some restrictions. To reflect the changes, the Department of Health and Human Services updated its epidemic order, which begins On December 21 and lasts until January 15, 2021. The changes include:

- High schools can return for in-person learning
- Colleges and universities can have students return to campus for the winter semester, with a voluntary commitment to wait until January 18 to restart in-person courses
- Casinos, bowling centers, and movie theatres can reopen with total capacity capped at 100, with food and drink concessions closed
- Outdoor and group fitness classes and non-contact sports can begin

Limits on residential gatherings remain and can include up to 10 persons from 2 households for indoor gatherings or up to 25 persons from up to 3 households for outdoor gatherings.
