Due to the Michigan Reconnect Program, enrollment is growing at community colleges throughout the state. The program provides free community college tuition for those 25-years and older, within certain guidelines. Since the program’s launch in February 2021, nearly 93,000 residents have been accepted into the program. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been highlighting the success of the program over the past couple of weeks, including successes such as a 14% enrollment increase in students aged 30-years and older compared to pre-pandemic enrollment levels at Grand Rapids Community College.
The programs are part of Governor Whitmer’s plan that at least 60% of Michigan’s population obtain a college degree or in-demand certificate by 2030. This goal is a way to help the state close the skills gap that is occurring, while helping residents achieve higher wage jobs. Additionally, the governor has stated that by achieving this goal, Michigan will be more competitive and will achieve economic growth.
