Governor Designates Emergency Interim Successors

Feb 01, 2019

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the individuals that would succeed her in the event of a disaster under the Emergency Interim Succession Act. Under the Michigan constitution, the line of succession is as follows: lieutenant governor, the elected secretary of state, the elected attorney general, the president pro tempore of the Senate, and the speaker of the House of Representatives. If none of those elected successors are available to perform the duties of governor, the responsibility falls to an emergency interim successor until a new governor is elected.

The emergency succession designees are:

  1. State Treasurer Rachel Eubanks
  2. Former Lt. Governor John Cherry
  3. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans
  4. Businessman Gary Torgow
  5. U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow
