Governor Creates Child Lead Poisoning Elimination Board

Last Friday, by Executive Order, Governor Rick Snyder created the Child Lead Poisoning Elimination Board. The purpose of the board is to develop a long-term, statewide strategy to help prevent lead exposure from all sources. The twelve-member board will include experts in the prevention and mitigation of child lead poisoning, and may include representatives from pediatric hospitals, local government, education, nonprofit, and health agencies. Lt. Governor Brian Calley will chair the new board, which will be comprised of seven gubernatorial appointees and the directors of four state departments or their designees. The group will make recommendations related to the testing of children for elevated blood lead levels, follow-up monitoring and services, environmental lead investigations, and remediation and abatement.

The board has been asked to provide the Governor with a written report by November 4, 2016 on its recommendations for:

Improving blood lead testing rate of children, especially in high-risk areas.
Improving the percentage of families utilizing follow-up service after a child has tested positive for elevated lead levels.
Improving the availability of environmental lead investigations for families when a child tests positive for elevated blood levels.Improvements to current remediation and abatement efforts.
Improvements to the existing collection, maintenance, sharing, and reporting efforts regarding child lead poisoning data.
