With the national census taking place next year, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order to ensure Michigan is ready. Census’ are important because the federal government uses that data for funding and for allocating congressional representation. The census data will also be used to redraw state House and Senate districts.
Executive Order 2019-15 creates the 2020 United States Census Complete Count Committee, which will focus on ensuring the census count in Michigan is complete and accurate. The committee will be charged with providing public leadership, identifying barriers that may prevent a full count, creating and implement an action plan to overcome recognized barriers, and identifying opportunities to coordinate with other entities working towards a complete count. It will be housed within the Department of Technology, Management and Budget and administered by members appointed by the governor.
Governor Whitmer will serve as the chairperson and Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist will serve as the vice-chairperson. Membership will include at least 50 people from various organizations, including members of the Michigan House and Senate, religious organizations, nonprofit organizations, business organizations, county and city officials, the Michigan Community College Association (an MLC client), and many others.
