Given the rising threat of PFAS contamination in the state’s drinking water supply, Governor Gretchen Whitmer called on the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to establish statewide standards. Previously the state had waited on the Federal Government to set standards but given their recent inaction the governor decided to set a state standard in order to protect Michigan’s drinking water. She has requested the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team to create a science advisory workgroup to review existing and proposed standards throughout the country and provide information to the rulemaking process by July 1, 2019. Governor Whitmer also called on DEQ to file a Request for Rulemaking to establish levels of PFAS in drinking water. She is asking stakeholders to provide input on proposed regulations by October 1, 2019.
