This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer proposed using $150 million in federal relief dollars to be dedicated to addressing critical needs in local park systems. The proposed investment would be administered as a grant program by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Every year there are a number of grant requests received by the DNR that go unfunded due to a lack of available funding.
Last month, the governor announced a similar proposal to invest $250 million of federal relief funding in parks and trails managed by the State of Michigan. Governor Whitmer’s funding proposals will both need to go through the legislative appropriation process.
