This week, through Executive Order, Governor Rick Snyder created the Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Commission. The commission will be comprised of state and independent health experts, and will be responsible for monitoring indicators of controlled substance abuse and diversion in Michigan. They will make recommendations to the Governor for actions involving licensing, law enforcement, substance abuse treatment and prevention, education, professional associations, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. “The Governor is taking the next steps to work on an issue that is plaguing not only the state, but the country as a whole. The commission created by executive order will get experts in relevant fields together to find solutions to help address a growing epidemic,” stated Cami Pendell of MLC.
The commission will be chaired by Lt. Governor Brian Calley and will be housed within the Executive Office. It will be comprised of seventeen members, including; one allopathic doctor, one osteopathic doctor, one dentist, one veterinarian, one physician’s assistant, one registered professional nurse, one pharmacist, two law enforcement officers, one psychologist, one representative from a Michigan hospice organization, one chronic pain sufferer, one representative from a Michigan medical school, one representative from a statewide pharmacy association, one representative of pharmaceutical manufacturers, one substance abuse treatment provider, and one member representing the general public.
Additionally, the commission will review the recommendations issued last fall by the Michigan Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Task Force, and will develop and propose policies and an action plan to implement recommendations within the report.
