Governor Announces Mobility Challenge

May 31, 2019

Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a new initiative to advance smart infrastructure initiatives and put the future of automotive technology on display during the 2020 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

The NAIAS 2020 Michigan Mobility Challenge calls upon industry innovators to propose dynamic technology deployments that embody how automated and connected vehicle technology can transform how we live, work, and play. The specific projects for the challenge will be determined based on proposals submitted through a Request for Proposals (RFP).

The goal is to showcase cutting-edge technologies by providing new, innovative mobility solutions for travel between Cobo Center and destinations including transportation hubs, hotels, restaurants and local points of interest. The technology demonstration(s) will be encompassed by a single mobile app that provides a seamless user-experience across the various projects.

The challenge is being led by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and PlanetM. Together they will collaborate with local stakeholders to determine desired routes, requirements, timelines, and funding levels. Industry partners will also be asked to team up with academic partners to document the effectiveness and public acceptance of the mobility solutions that are selected and demonstrated.
