It’s closing in on midnight and local clerks continue to tabulate results as quickly as possible. Earlier this evening, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson stated that nearly 5.5 million voters went to the polls, well exceeding the previous state record of 5.04 million voters. Of those, 3.26 million voters “voted early” with well over 2 million more going to the polls today. The delay in tabulating votes, in part, is a result of Michigan having a ban on counting ballots early. Therefore, it is difficult to “call” many races – Secretary Benson expects to see all results within 24 hours, which is a relief to many candidates and onlookers. Initially, there were reports that results would take days.
MLC will provide election updates in the morning – including a list of “called” state house races. Both Republican and Democratic leadership are as eager as we are to determine which party will have 56 members to be in the majority.
As always, please keep an eye on the MLC Blog for further updates. Also, please contact the lobby team for any additional information.
