General Election Overview: U.S. Senate

Through the general election on November 3, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

Commentary

U.S. Senator Gary Peters is running for his second term, having previously served three terms in Congress. Peters’ opponent, Republican John James, ran against U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow in 2018 and performed quite well, receiving 45.76% of the vote, while Senator Stabenow received 52.26% of the vote.  This race is on all national pundits “watch lists”.

During his first term in the U.S. Senate, Senator Peters has served on the following committees:

    • Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs (Ranking Member)
    • Armed Service Committee
      • Subcommittee on Airland
      • Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities (Ranking Member)
    • Commerce, Science, and Transportation
      • Subcommittee on Aviation and Space
      • Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet
      • Subcommittee on Science, Oceans, Fisheries, and Weather
      • Subcommittee on Transportation and Safety
    • Joint Economic Committee

Democratic Candidate:

    • Senator Gary PetersThroughout his career he’s served in the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Michigan Senate, as Michigan Lottery Commissioner, and a Rochester Hills City Councilman. Prior to public service, he was a financial advisor. He is also a Veteran.

Republican Candidate:

    • John JamesWorks at his family business, Veteran.
