General Election Overview: Michigan Attorney General

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

Commentary

The last two Attorneys General of Michigan have been from the Republican Party. However, prior to that members of the Democratic Party held the office from 1955-2003. Speaker Tom Leonard has the campaign experience that Dana Nessel lacks. However, Ms. Nessel may see an advantage if there is in fact a “blue wave” during the Midterm elections.

Democratic Candidate:

Dana Nessel – Managing partner of Nessel & Kessel Law, former Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor, president and founder of the Fair Michigan Foundation and co-founder of Fair Michigan Justice Project

Republican Candidate:

Tom Leonard – Michigan Speaker of the House, former assistant prosecutor in Genesee County, and former assistant Attorney General

Libertarian Candidate:

Lisa Lane Gioia

Gerald Van Sickle
