General Election Overview: 99th House District

Sep 01, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 99th House District is located in Isabella and Midland Counties.  The district includes the townships of Edenville, Geneva, Greendale, Hope, Ingersoll, Jasper, Mills, Mount Haley, Port, and Warren and the City of Coleman.  It has a 51% Republican base.

Commentary

The race for this seat is to replace term limited Speaker of the House Kevin Cotter (R-Mount Pleasant).  Democratic candidate Bryan Mielke nearly knocked off Speaker Cotter in 2014, and with Mr. Mielke running again, this seat has definite pickup potential for the Democratic caucus.  However, this seat has been held by Republicans for decades.  This race is one of the more competitive races this November.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Bryan Mielke – Owner of a software development and energy analysis company, member of the Union Township Planning Commission.

    • Primary Endorsement – Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan Nurses Association, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, Michigan Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Republican Candidate:

  • Roger Hauck – Member of the Union Township Board of Trustees, small business building duplexes owner, works at Delfield Company.

    • Primary Endorsements – Property Management Association of Michigan, Great Lakes Education Project, National Federation of Independent Business-MI.
