Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).
District Overview
The 99th House District is located in Isabella and Midland Counties. The district includes the townships of Edenville, Geneva, Greendale, Hope, Ingersoll, Jasper, Mills, Mount Haley, Port, and Warren and the City of Coleman. It has a 51% Republican base.
Commentary
The race for this seat is to replace term limited Speaker of the House Kevin Cotter (R-Mount Pleasant). Democratic candidate Bryan Mielke nearly knocked off Speaker Cotter in 2014, and with Mr. Mielke running again, this seat has definite pickup potential for the Democratic caucus. However, this seat has been held by Republicans for decades. This race is one of the more competitive races this November.
