Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 98^th House District includes a portion of Bay and Midland Counties; it has a 57% Republican base.

Commentary

Incumbent Representative, Gary Glenn (R-Midland), is running for his second term in office.  The seat base may not be as strong as other Republican districts, but it tends to lean close to 60% Republican in past races.  The Democratic candidate it would have an uphill battle to win the seat this November.

During his first term in office, Representative Glenn has served as Vice Chair of the Energy Policy Committee.  Additionally, he is a member of the committees on Commerce and Trade, Military and Veterans Affairs, and Tax Policy.

Democratic Candidate:

• Geoff Malicoat – Elder law attorney, small business owner.
  • Primary Endorsements – Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, Michigan Association of Police Associations, Detroit Police Officers Association, Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters.
  • General Endorsement – Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidate:

• Gary Glenn – Small business owner of a commercial real estate and political and public relations consulting business.
  • Primary Endorsements – Michigan Realtors Association, County Road. Association of Michigan, Small Business Association of Michigan, Small BIZ PAC
  • General Endorsements – Michigan Restaurant Association, Property Management Association of Michigan.
