General Election Overview: 8th U.S. House District

Through the general election on November 3, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District

The 8th U.S. House District includes Ingham and Livingston Counties and a portion of Oakland County.

Commentary

Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin is running for her second term in Congress. In 2018, she defeated the incumbent to win this seat, making her the first Democrat to represent this seat since 2001. While in office, she has served on the following committees:

    • House Armed Services Committee
      • Subcommittee on Intelligence, Emerging Threats, and Capabilities
      • Subcommittee on Readiness
    • House Security Committee
      • Subcommittee on Intelligence and Counterterrorism
      • Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Innovation

The district, which has seen voters shifting to the middle left, recently had a 56% Republican base. In 2016, President Trump received 53.59% of the vote, but in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 52.33% of the vote.

Democratic Candidate:

    • Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin – Congresswoman, former CIA agent, worked in national security roles at the White House under the Bush and Obama administrations.

Republican Candidate:

    • Paul Junge – Former deputy district attorney, former news anchor, worked at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the Trump administration.

Libertarian Candidate:

    • Joe Hartman
