General Election Overview: 83rd House District

Oct 06, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 83rd House District includes Sanilac County and a portion of St Clair County; including the City of Port Huron and the Townships of Burtchville and Fort Gratiot.  The district has a 54% Republican base.

Commentary

Representative Paul Muxlow is term limited from running for reelection leaving this seat open.  The seat was represented by a Democratic legislator as recently as 2010 and the district tends to elect moderate candidates.  Neither of the major party candidates has experience in elected office.  However, Republican candidate Shane Hernandez beat two strong candidates in the primary election to win the chance to run for the seat this November.

Democratic Candidate:

Republican Candidate:

  • Shane Hernandez – Architect.

    • General Endorsements – National Federation of Independent Business-Michigan, Small Business Association of Michigan, Great Lakes Education Project, Michigan Freedom Network.

Green Candidate:
