General Election Overview: 82nd House District

Sep 29, 2016

Through the general election on November 8, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available, in addition to a portion of endorsements (when applicable).

District Overview

The 82nd House District is located in Lapeer County.  The district has a 57% Republican base.

Commentary

Representative Gary Howell (R-North Branch) is running for his first full two-year term in office.  He won a special election earlier this year to replace former Representative Todd Courser who resigned from his seat.  The rural district has trended toward Republican candidates during the last several elections and should remain in the “R” column this November.

While in the legislature, Representative Howell has served on the following committees; Criminal Justice, Workforce and Talent Development, and the Regulatory Reform Committee.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Margaret Guerrero DeLuca – Substitute teacher, former senior manager at Chrysler Financial, former Mayor of Imlay City and City Commissioner.

Republican Candidate:

  • Gary Howell – Farmer, U.S. Army Veteran.

    • Primary Endorsements – County Road Association of Michigan, Michigan Relators Association, Michigan Farm Bureau, Right to Life of Michigan.
    • General Endorsements – Michigan Restaurant Association, National Federation of Independent Business-Michigan.
