General Election Overview: 80th House District

District Overview

This west Michigan district is located in Kent County and includes East Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Cascade Township, and portions of Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Township.

Commentary

The Democratic Party has a 51.5% base in this seat, giving them the slightest advantage. Their candidate, Phil Skaggs, has served on legislative staff and in local government for nearly a decade, providing him with name recognition amongst voters. He’s running against Republican Jeffrey Johnson, who is a political newcomer.

Democratic Candidate:

- Phil Skaggs – Kent County Commissioner, former East Grand Rapids City Commissioner.

Republican Candidate:

- Jeffrey Johnson – Attorney, worked in the tech field in marketing and strategic planning.
